Full plot (contains spoilers)
The head of the Special Department for Combating Organized Crime, Robert Ehrlacher, and constitutional protection officer Peter März are found murdered by gunshots to the head in a hunting lodge in the Vienna Woods. Interior Minister Maria Kerber then forms an investigative team consisting of Lieutenant Colonel Franziska Malzer from Vienna and Lieutenant Colonel Carl-Albrecht Nassau from Salzburg. Malzer comes from humble circumstances and had caught her ex-husband evading taxes. Nassau drives an electric car and comes from a former noble family based at the Karnstein hunting estate in Salzburg. If the nobility, which Malzer calls a “clown show,” had not been abolished, he would be between 19th and 23rd in the Habsburg line of succession. Nassau’s father, Carl-Otto, disapproves of his work in the police force. After an argument with his father, Carl-Albrecht took his Belgian mother’s maiden name. Marie-Sophie Nassau is Carl-Albrecht’s sister. Franziska lives with her sister Ingeborg in public housing. Mia is Franziska’s granddaughter; her mother, Johanna, died in an accident four years ago. With the support of IT specialist Lieutenant Judith Zimmel, Malzer and Nassau are to find out what the two victims were involved in after they were deliberately lured into a trap. While searching Ehrlacher’s apartment, Nassau shoots an attacker who bears the tattoo of a mafia organization that was believed to have been dismantled. Forensic pathologist Evelyn Rauch-Wollinger finds the same tattoo during the autopsies of the two victims. The burglar Georg Landauer is not Ehrlacher and März’s killer, since he has an alibi for the time of the crime. In parallel with Malzer and Nassau’s investigation, constitutional protection officer Mag. René Horvath and his assistant Richard Krammer also try to take over the case. Landauer worked as a forklift driver at Glasa, a chemical wholesaler in Vienna’s 11th district, run by the Fischer brothers, Alexander, known as “the Brain,” and Nikolaus, known as “the Fist,” who originally came from St. Petersburg. Irina is Glasa’s receptionist and is in a relationship with Nikolaus Fischer. In the Internal Affairs archives, Malzer finds the files on Operation Ganymed, a concentrated crackdown on organized crime in eastern Austria eleven years earlier. Malzer herself was involved at the time, as were Ehrlacher and März. The two men had conspicuously high incomes. Ehrlacher had told his wife Karin that the money came from investments in cryptocurrencies. The investigators, however, suspect that the Fischer brothers paid them so they could continue their criminal activities without interference. Horvath tells his assistant Krammer that he feels threatened and that someone wants to kill him. An old photograph in Ehrlacher’s album shows März and Horvath on a hunting trip together. Police President Ernst Fiala was also a member of the hunting party. Peter März was in a relationship with Irina, who worked at Glasa. In addition to being shot, März and Ehrlacher were also struck by bolts from a crossbow imported by the Fischer brothers’ company. Before school, a stranger with curly hair gives Mia a threatening letter addressed to Franziska. Carl-Albrecht then takes Ingeborg and Mia to his family’s castle in Salzburg. However, the Fischer brothers and Irina track them down there, and all three are killed in a shootout. Horvath is eventually found shot dead as well. At his side are a crossbow, Ehrlacher’s computer, and a farewell letter confessing that März and Ehrlacher were well paid by the Fischers and that the constitutional protection service looked the other way. In Horvath’s wound channel, forensic pathologist Evelyn Rauch-Wollinger finds cotton fibers that are inconsistent with suicide. A weapon may have been wrapped in a towel to muffle the gunshot, but no towel was found at the scene. The investigators discover that Horvath, März, and Ehrlacher were trained by Colonel Karl Fallböck. Fallböck wanted the three of them to stop their illegal activities. In response, they infected his computer with malware, and thousands of files containing child pornography were subsequently found on Fallböck’s computer. He then killed himself. Lieutenant Zimmel is his illegitimate daughter; Internal Affairs had recorded his child-support payments. After Zimmel confesses to committing the murders to avenge her father, she throws herself out of a window to her death.
