Three socially isolated people seek new beginnings as they try to change the circumstances of their lives.
The story
Judith, a former flight attendant and single mother, works from home as a telephone operator and labels plastic components, with her son Oskar at the center of her life. Jochen lives in precarious circumstances in a cheap boarding house and faces losing his single room when another tenant is expected to move in. He sets out to find better-paid work. Ulrike, recently left by her boyfriend, quits her long-held government-office job and begins training as a masseuse. Their stories are interwoven, though they overlap only slightly, as each confronts loneliness and the possibility of changing their circumstances.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The three separate episodes are interwoven dramaturgically, but overlap only slightly: Judith, a former flight attendant and single mother, works from home as a telephone operator and labels plastic components. Her son Oskar is the center of her life. She flirts with customers on the phone. Toward the end of the film, dressed as a flight attendant, she goes to see Jochen. Jochen works at a wholesale market and lives in precarious circumstances in a cheap boarding house. When another tenant is supposed to move into his single room, Jochen sets out to find a new job with better pay. As an insurance salesman, he has to change not only his outward appearance. After 18 years working as an administrative clerk at a government office, Ulrike quits her job. Her boyfriend has just left her. She tries to make a fresh start and begins training as a masseuse. The three protagonists are portrayed in social isolation. They are connected by loneliness, but also by their desire to change their circumstances. At the end of the film, Ulrike and two coworkers, dressed as bees, wander through the city and take a swim in the Isar.
