A motorcycle-riding pastor unsettles a conservative Lübeck congregation as her lingering bond with her ex-husband intersects with a crisis in his new relationship.
The story
Franziska Kemper, a young motorcycle-riding pastor, takes up a post in a conservative congregation in Lübeck, where her motorcycle boots initially unsettle some older members. She expected this reaction. Having moved from Bavaria to northern Germany to be closer to her two children’s father, her ex-husband Christoph, she has not entirely forgotten him; as a clergywoman, she values fidelity and compassion. Christoph’s new girlfriend Andrea is pregnant, but may be unable to carry the baby to term because her mother urgently needs an organ transplant. Andrea is being considered as a suitable donor, and emotional support is needed in Christoph’s new relationship. It seems natural to ask Franziska to provide it, though she is initially reluctant.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A motorcycle-riding pastor in a rather conservative congregation in Lübeck causes a stir. Older congregation members in particular are initially unsettled when the young pastor, Franziska Kemper, arrives in her motorcycle boots. But Franziska had expected this when she accepted the position as the congregation’s pastor. Even so, she had decided to move from Bavaria to northern Germany to be closer to her two children’s father, her ex-husband Christoph, who lives there and whom she cannot entirely forget. After all, especially as a member of the clergy, she considers “eternal fidelity” and compassion for others to be important values. Christoph’s life, however, is currently rather turbulent: his new girlfriend, Andrea, has just become pregnant, but will probably be unable to carry the baby to term because her mother urgently needs an organ transplant. Since Andrea is being considered as a suitable organ donor, Christoph’s new relationship now needs emotional support. It seems natural, then, to ask the pastor to provide it. At first somewhat reluctantly, Franziska follows her spiritual calling.
