A group of young musicians turn a summer at boarding school into a battle over whether learning and music can go together.
The story
Siggi, the son of the Minister of Education, must make up his school-leaving exams and is sent to prepare at a boarding school over the summer holidays. He and his friends are already composing a musical, so Siggi’s girlfriend Inge proposes that they stay at the boarding school run by her kindly uncle Emmanuel in Seeburg Castle. Their musical approach to studying is disrupted when the strict Dr. Wimmer arrives to supervise Siggi’s academic progress, alongside eccentric colleagues Fräulein Dr. Schickedanz and Studienrat Stich. Wimmer forbids the musical and takes over the school, prompting Siggi and his friends to resist the teachers’ rules.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Siggi, the son of the Minister of Education, has to make up his school-leaving exams and, at his father’s request, is supposed to prepare for them at a boarding school during the summer holidays. Since Siggi and his friends are in the middle of working on a musical they have composed themselves, his girlfriend Inge comes up with the idea of moving together to the boarding school run by her good-natured uncle Emmanuel, in the romantic Seeburg Castle. While the regular pupils are away for the holidays, Siggi and his friends pass the time there under the motto “Learning with Music,” until the strict Dr. Wimmer arrives. The Minister of Education’s personal aide is supposed to monitor Siggi’s academic progress on his boss’s orders. Along with his equally eccentric colleagues, geography teacher Fräulein Dr. Schickedanz and sports teacher Studienrat Stich, he makes life difficult for the supposed pupils and forbids them from working on the musical. After Dr. Wimmer also forces the lovable Uncle Emmanuel to hand over the running of the boarding school to him, Siggi and his “fellow pupils” decide to actively resist the teaching staff. While one prank after another drives the teachers to the brink of despair, Siggi catches up on his studies with Rosl Kainz, the attractive village schoolteacher. Her brother Christian, known by his stage name Chris Roberts, is a famous schlager star whom the young people are determined to persuade to take part in their musical. Shortly before the holidays end, the Minister of Education finds his son and his friends making music aboard a paddle steamer. The supposed pupils personally convince the initially indignant minister with their knowledge and prove that they are by no means the uneducated, spoiled offspring he might have expected. Siggi’s father is visibly enthusiastic about the “Learning with Music” concept when Dr. Wimmer, Fräulein Dr. Schickedanz and Studienrat Stich arrive to try to change his mind. Suddenly, explosive devices that two children had hidden on the steamer go off. The pupils and teachers are catapulted into the lake.
