At the Excelsior Hotel in St. Gilgen, a tax inspector unsettles a playboy’s routine while a woman disguised as a drummer stirs confusion in a visiting band.

The story

James Sander, the playboy owner of the Excelsior Hotel in St. Gilgen, routinely brings his lovers there and puts them in the same room. His routine is disrupted when Hilde Moll arrives, identifies herself as his new tax inspector, and sets out to straighten out his finances. Her boss, Dr. Ewald Rabanus, stays in touch by phone, prompting the porter to suspect him of being a criminal. A band hired to play in the hotel lounge arrives without its expected drummer: after Peter breaks his arm, his sister Bibi takes his place disguised as a young man. The bandmates try to uncover her identity, while trumpeter Mike falls for her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

James Sander owns the Excelsior Hotel in St. Gilgen. He is known as a playboy and regularly brings his lovers to the hotel, always having them stay in the same room. The hotel staff are used to the women visiting, so Hilde Moll is also put up in James’s reserved room and then driven to his villa. James, who is actually expecting his latest girlfriend, Chicky, is taken aback. Hilde introduces herself as his new tax inspector, there to finally get his finances in order. Her boss, Dr. Ewald Rabanus, has also come to St. Gilgen with her, and keeps in touch by phone to get updates from Hilde. This arouses the suspicions of Pankraz, the hotel porter, who is an avid reader of crime novels and suspects Rabanus of being a criminal. A young band has arrived at the hotel, hired by the manager to provide music in the lounge. They normally play rock ’n’ roll, but have to switch to lighter music to suit the clientele. The original lineup was also supposed to include drummer Peter Werner, whom they had hired without ever meeting him. However, Peter breaks his arm shortly before the trip to St. Gilgen, so his sister Bibi steps in for him, disguised as a young man. From the outset, the other band members believe that Bibi, who introduces herself as Peter, is a woman. Trumpeter Mike soon catches Bibi without her boyish wig in her hotel room, but Bibi claims that she is only Peter’s sister. The other band members try several more times to expose Bibi, but she is always one step ahead of them. This particularly bothers Mike, who has long since fallen in love with Bibi. In the end, the band members send a letter to the real Peter and bring him to St. Gilgen. The band’s men dress up as women, and Mike, also dressed as a woman, announces that he will marry “Peter.” Only when the real Peter joins the group does Bibi remove her wig and reveal that she is a woman. James also has a problem with women, without realizing it. Hilde Moll has fallen in love with him. At the same time, James’s tax burden is so high that it could only be alleviated by the hotel going bankrupt or by getting married and thereby moving into a lower tax bracket. Hilde manages to convince James of her physical charms while wearing a swimsuit and without her glasses. But when she brings all of James’s lovers to St. Gilgen so he can choose a woman to be at his side, James declares in horror that he wants to remain a bachelor. Hilde confesses to Rabanus that she loves James, and he has James’s lovers told about it. In the end, James and Hilde get married. They are soon placed in the lowest tax bracket after becoming parents several times over in a very short time.
