A village mayoral race shakes up Toni Freitag’s carefully ordered family life when his daughter’s outspoken mother-in-law arrives.

The story

Toni Freitag, a model Bavarian with Turkish roots, runs a plumbing business in the quiet town of Bergham and is expected to become mayor. His son-in-law Osman is meant to take over the business, but Toni’s orderly life is disrupted when his daughter Franzi arrives with her mother-in-law, Farah, a sharp-tongued businesswoman from Berlin. Farah turns Toni’s wife, Anne, against him, and Anne enters the mayoral race against her husband. With Farah encouraging her and many local women supporting her, Anne challenges the village’s expectations. Toni responds by trying to spy on his political opponent so he can undermine her candidacy.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Things are going well for Toni Freitag, a model Bavarian with Turkish roots who runs his own plumbing business, in the quiet town of Bergham. He is expected to become mayor, and his son-in-law, Osman, is supposed to take over the business. Just then, his daughter Franzi turns up with her mother-in-law, Farah, and the perfect world of the reigning marksmen’s king begins to wobble. On top of that, the sharp-tongued businesswoman from Berlin turns Toni’s wife, Anne, against him. Anne not only suddenly neglects her family responsibilities, but also runs against Toni in a contested mayoral election. Toni is not the only one upset; the former mayor and Toni’s fellow marksmen are, too. As expected, Farah gets heavily involved again and really eggs Anne on. She tells her to demand a public debate, which the village sees as an outright challenge. Even so, Anne has plenty of supporters beforehand, especially among the women. Toni therefore tries to spy on his opponent so he can discredit her. Despite all the trouble, Toni’s son-in-law Osman has decided to go back to Berlin. A plumbing business out here in the provinces simply isn’t for him. To help him, he joins forces with his father, who is supposed to take Farah back, with Osman planning to go along at the same time. But since the debate goes very badly for Anne, Farah decides to stay in Bergham for the time being so she can continue supporting her. Anne meanwhile discovers that Toni has used rather unfair methods to work against her candidacy, packs her things, and leaves her husband. Once again, it seems everything is heading for disaster, and Toni has to get over himself. To persuade Anne to come back, he asks her forgiveness at the next election event and, convinced that she will make the better mayor, gives her the sole candidacy. After his parents leave, Osman realizes that Berlin is no option for him either, because he doesn’t want to be away from his family.
