Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the mid-1970s, on the day of Great-Grandmother Sophie’s funeral, a lightning strike brings down an old tree on the family’s shared weekend property. The family consists of Sophie’s direct descendants: Mathilde, Ilse, and Erich, his wife Frieda, and their children, Gitti and Bernd. Bernd is married to Eva, and the two are the parents of Lorenz and Jana. Gitti is a single mother to Inga. As every year, the family spends the summer holidays on the property. The possibility of selling it as building land is now being discussed, and the family worries about the children because the radio reports that a girl has been abducted. Meanwhile, Jana, Lorenz, and his friend Frank explore the overgrown garden of the mysterious neighbor and cheat each other when keeping score of the wasps they have killed. Their cousin Inga is usually left out because she is still too young. Erich repairs the electrical connection damaged by the lightning strike, Bernd works on the treehouse with the children, and Ilse befriends a woman who was bitten by Ilse’s dog. Gitti and her sister-in-law Eva trade insults, and Inga wishes her father would visit. In the meantime, the family has to work together to remove a wasps’ nest, which nearly goes wrong. At Inga’s birthday party, the quarrel escalates when the other children, angry because Gitti has insulted them, refuse to let Inga onto the treehouse, even though her mother had promised she could go up. That evening, it starts to rain, and Inga sneaks out of the house to climb the treehouse alone. She slips and has an accident.
