The story

Gabriele, a divorced former rocker who now runs a musical-instrument shop, devotes himself to his 10-year-old daughter, Sofia. His friends’ attempts to introduce him to women usually falter because he talks about Sofia. Then Mara, an old friend who has become an independent photographer, re-enters his life. Their first date seems to be going well until Mara says she does not want children and hates them. Caught up in his attraction to her, Gabriele lies about having a daughter. He then begins an increasingly absurd effort to keep Sofia and Mara from discovering one another, even rearranging his apartment according to which of them is visiting.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Gabriele, a former rocker who is now a musical-instrument shopkeeper, is divorced and a devoted father whose only focus is his 10-year-old daughter, Sofia. Whenever his friends introduce him to new women, all he does is talk about his daughter, ruining any chance he might have. One day, Mara reappears in Gabriele’s life. She’s a friend he hasn’t seen in many years and has since become a dynamic, independent photographer. On their first date, just as things are going well, Mara tells Gabriele that not only does she not want children, she hates them. Swept up in his passion, Gabriele denies that Sofia exists. From then on, his days are filled with one absurd scheme after another to hide his daughter’s presence from Mara, and vice versa—going so far as to rearrange his apartment each time, depending on which of the two is coming over. But lies don’t stay hidden for long, and Gabriele’s charade won’t last.
