After a series of similar murders, investigators Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein follow a trail linking the victims to the Kaltensee industrialist family.
The story
Investigators Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are tasked with solving the murder of Goldberg, a 92-year-old man believed to be a Holocaust survivor, found executed in his home. An autopsy reveals a tattoo suggesting he was instead a member of the Waffen-SS. When two more people are killed in the same way, the investigators suspect a serial killer. A number, 16145, appears written in blood at each scene. The three victims are connected to the Kaltensee industrialist family, which fled East Prussia for the Taunus near the end of the Second World War and later built a global corporation.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Investigators Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein must solve the murder of a 92-year-old Holocaust survivor named Goldberg, who was executed in his own home. During the autopsy, a tattoo is discovered that suggests the victim was not Jewish at all, but a member of the Waffen-SS. When two more murders are committed in the same manner, the investigators fear they are dealing with a serial killer. At each of the three murder scenes, they find a number written in blood: 16145. All three victims had ties to the Kaltensee industrialist family, which fled East Prussia for the Taunus toward the end of the Second World War and went on to build a global corporation. Since the solution to the mystery can only be found in the former East Prussia, Pia Kirchhoff travels unofficially to Poland, where everything is eventually revealed. On 16 January 1945, the murder victims had committed an atrocity against the real Kaltensee family, thereby securing not only an unhindered escape to Germany but also the family’s inheritance. Just as the family members had been executed back then, someone had now taken revenge in turn. The investigators intervene shortly before the revenge is completed against the last survivor. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the previously unknown person is killed: an elderly woman who had survived the massacre in January 1945. A journalist’s plan to write a biography of the Kaltensee family, for which he also interviewed the perpetrator, rekindled the trauma of what she had experienced, and she took action.
