Full plot (contains spoilers)
Wolfgang Wöller, mayor of the fictional Lower Bavarian town of Kaltenthal, wants to escape the Christmas rush and books a Mediterranean cruise. But as soon as he boards, he would rather turn straight back: the ship is also carrying three nuns from the Kaltenthal convent—Sisters Hanna, Agnes and Felicitas. They were given the trip as a gift and now plan to raise money along the way for a family of five in trouble, who had to leave their home because of large rent arrears. They meet Felix, the son of the shipowner, Max Brockmann. The little boy lost his mother in a car accident and has become friends with Ursula Henning, who works aboard the ship. His father does not seem to approve, so his butler, Roland, dismisses Ursula without consulting him. When Felix sees her disembarking in Tenerife, he tries to run after her. Sister Hanna manages to stop him just in time and then tries to find a solution to the difficult situation. Meanwhile, Wöller has met Isabella Kagel, who is also from Kaltenthal, and wants to marry her on board. But she leaves him practically at the altar. Wöller had not recognized her as the woman he had treated rather badly when he was once looking for a bride. Isabella was nearly 30 kilograms heavier back then, which led Wöller to reject her insensitively. Back home, he recognizes her only from a photograph his secretary obtained. In a side plot, Wöller exposes a con man who was trying to swindle the shipowner out of a huge sum. At the end, the three nuns fly back to Munich with the mayor in Brockmann’s own plane for the convent’s big Christmas celebration, carrying enough money won in the ship’s casino to completely relieve the impoverished Kaltenthal family of its troubles.
