Full plot (contains spoilers)
Martin had to flee his homeland a long time ago because, as a teenager in a gang, he committed a heinous crime that has since become barred by the statute of limitations. After twenty years in the French Foreign Legion, Martin returns to his Czech hometown of Brno. First, he visits his sister Johana, whose husband reacts with hostility to his unfamiliar brother-in-law. Martin learns that his mother has died. During a visit to a music club, the fit ex-soldier rescues the young Sebastian, who has gotten into a fight. The next day, Sebastian seeks him out to invite him to meet his parents, who want to show Martin their gratitude. The family, whose patriarch is the city’s deputy mayor, turns out to be formal and stiff; the young Sebastian is a cynic who insults his sister Sara, calling her a “nun” in front of Martin. Sara, in turn, provocatively asks him how many people he has shot. Soon afterward, Martin leaves the lavish villa and runs back into the city. There, he finds an abandoned courtyard workshop and decides to rent it and turn it into a café. To finance the project, Martin competes in illegal martial arts matches. Sara visits him there to apologize for her remarks; the two become friends and go on bike rides together. Sara’s family disapproves of their relationship; her father confronts Martin about his past crime. At the same time, Martin receives news from France that a former comrade has died by suicide. In an extremely strained emotional state, Martin throws himself into a hopeless fight against three opponents; he ends up badly injured in the hospital, where Sara visits him.
