The story
Fourteen-year-old Hanni’s parents still see her as a child, though she confidently stands up for her views. After she meets nineteen-year-old Franz, they sleep together; he is sentenced to nine months in prison for seducing a minor and loses his job as an unskilled laborer. Released early for good behavior, Franz finds Hanni’s parents unable to accept that she will not end the relationship. Hanni and Franz continue meeting in secret, while her father threatens to report Franz if they meet again.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The 14-year-old Hanni is seen by her parents as a little child, even though she already confidently stands up for her views. When she meets 19-year-old Franz, she sleeps with him, which earns him nine months in prison for seducing a minor and costs him his job as an unskilled laborer. When he is released early for good behavior, Hanni’s father rails against the government and wishes the death penalty and the strict old regime would return, even if “what they did to the Jews” was wrong. Her parents are at a loss when they realize that Hanni does not want to give up her relationship with Franz. Franz and Hanni continue meeting in secret. When Hanni becomes pregnant, they want to have an abortion, but fear that Hanni will then be handed over to the police. When Hanni’s father threatens to report Franz if they meet again, Hanni gets hold of a pistol. She urges Franz to protect her and shoot her father. Hanni lures her father into the forest for a meeting with Franz, where Franz shoots him. They are both arrested. Outside the courtroom, Franz learns from Hanni that their child died shortly after birth. Hanni turns away from him and says that their relationship was only physical. Dejected, Franz agrees with her that there was no real love between them.
