The story

After eleven-year-old Leon disappears from a children’s home in the border region between Bavaria and Austria, Felix Simon draws Detective Jonas Becker’s attention to a similar missing-person case from five years earlier: six-year-old Jennifer Petri vanished from the same home. The home is now run by Kai Bischoff, a former caregiver whom Becker knew when he lived there as a child while waiting for adoptive parents. Chief Inspector Birgit Reincke, who led the earlier investigation and is no longer actively working as an investigator, agrees to help Becker. Forensic archaeologist Dr. Marie Sonnleitner joins the inquiry.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After eleven-year-old Leon disappears from a children’s home in the border region between Bavaria and Austria, Felix Simon draws Detective Jonas Becker’s attention to similarities with another missing-person case from five years earlier. The home is now run by Kai Bischoff, whom Jonas Becker knows from the past as a caregiver, since he himself once lived at the home while waiting for adoptive parents. Back then, six-year-old Jennifer Petri disappeared from the same home. Chief Inspector Birgit Reincke was in charge of the police investigation. Although she has not worked actively as an investigator since then, she agrees to help Becker at his insistence. Forensic archaeologist Dr. Marie Sonnleitner of the University of Salzburg is also brought into the investigation. Before long, Leon’s caregiver is found shot and buried in a wooded area. Seventeen-year-old Oliver Brix is suspected. He was like an older brother to Leon and now deals drugs. Brix denies having anything to do with the disappearances of Leon and Jennifer. A forensic report, including a DNA comparison, clears Brix. Before she was murdered, Anna Wiegand had made phone calls to a hotel in Spain and to wholesale tycoon Erik Höhning, who regularly provides financial support to the children’s home. Erik and Yvonne Höhning had taken Leon in temporarily, but the boy wanted to return to the home to be with his friends. Reincke and Sonnleitner find Jennifer’s remains in the woods. The cause of death was a broken neck, probably from an impact. According to the records at the home, Jennifer had been staying with the Höhnings at the time, as they intended to take her in as a foster child. Yvonne Höhning is questioned and admits that Jennifer slipped in the swimming pool and hit her head on the pool’s edge. Bischoff then apparently suggested making the body disappear to avoid trouble. Brix, who cannot stop thinking about Leon’s disappearance, attacks Bischoff. During the struggle, Brix hits his head and dies instantly. A shaken Bischoff now admits that his cousin, Elmar Landgraf, helped him dispose of Jennifer’s body back then. Meanwhile, Dr. Marie Sonnleitner is searching for Leon and finds him on Landgraf’s farm, where he is apparently being held. Elmar Landgraf surprises her there and overpowers her. Reincke and Becker’s search for Leon also leads them to Landgraf. Marie manages to free herself temporarily, but Landgraf chases her into the woods. Before Landgraf can shoot Marie, Reincke and Becker overpower him.
