The story

Jutta, widowed for two years, is raising three children on her own. Her teenage daughter Mareike longs to become a model and hopes to win the Miss Baden-Württemberg pageant, while Jutta would prefer that she pursue a secure retail apprenticeship. Mareike earns money at the market with her grandfather, but modeling schools initially reject her. There she falls for Samir, who does not return her feelings. Meanwhile, Jutta has begun dating her colleague Winnie but hesitates to involve him in family life. Mareike also resents her mother's dates, believing they show a lack of regard for her late stepfather. Through her friend Basma, Mareike discovers belly dancing as a way to express herself.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jutta has been widowed for two years and is a single mother of three children, who can be quite a handful. Her two youngest keep her very busy, and her somewhat overweight teenage daughter, Mareike, is determined to become a model. Jutta would rather see her complete a secure apprenticeship as a retail saleswoman, while Mareike has her sights set on winning the Miss Baden-Württemberg pageant. She helps her grandfather sell vegetables at the market to earn money for the courses she needs. But the modeling schools she contacts turn her down. At the market, she meets a boy named Samir and falls in love with him, but he does not return her feelings. Jutta’s love life is no less complicated. She has been on a few dates with her colleague Winnie, but for now she does not want to bring him into her family. Mareike also reproaches her over the dates, accusing her of forgetting her late stepfather. Through her friend Basma, Mareike discovers belly dancing and is finally able to express her feelings. Then she suddenly develops patchy hair loss, and a quick therapeutic solution is not possible. Having to wear a wig on top of that does little for her self-confidence. At this very moment, she is accepted into a newly starting modeling course. When Mareike then tries to hang herself in the garden shed, and Jutta manages to stop her at the last moment, Jutta spontaneously cuts off her own hair in solidarity with her daughter. The two have a deeply moving conversation, and Mareike tells her about all her worries: that she hates herself and hopes someone will fall in love with her one day. They find their way back to each other, and Jutta eventually lets Winnie into her family, too. While Jutta and Mareike are trying on wigs in a shop, her daughter has already set her sights on a new plan. She now wants to become a professional belly dancer and take classes with Basma in Egypt.
