Sent from rural Upper Bavaria to deliver a prized mare to a Munich nightclub, Wolfgang is startled to learn she is meant for a striptease act—and his boss’s daughter Marie has come along to see the city.

The story

Wolfgang, a country lad working for a horse dealer in Upper Bavaria, spends his evenings bowling and is fond of his employer’s daughter, Marie, who is interested in him too. When his boss sends him to Munich to deliver Vroni, the stable’s finest grey mare, Marie joins him, keen to experience the city’s “wild life.” At the Red Mill nightclub, Wolfgang discovers that Vroni is intended for a striptease act, with star dancer Rita appearing as Lady Godiva on horseback. Marie is quickly captivated by the city atmosphere, while Wolfgang would rather return to the countryside and his bowling friends.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The country lad Wolfgang works for a horse dealer in the heart of Upper Bavaria. His two passions are his bowling nights and Marie, his boss’s voluptuous daughter. The country girl has no idea yet how lucky she is that Wolfgang has had his eye on her for some time, even though she is quite interested in him too. One day, the boss sends Wolfgang to the “big city” on a special errand: he is to deliver the grey mare Vroni, the old man’s finest horse in the stable, to a customer in Munich. The customer is based at the “Red Mill,” a nightclub. Simple country bumpkin Wolfgang is completely taken aback when he discovers that the establishment is a nightclub, and that the horse is supposed to be part of a steamy striptease act: star dancer Rita plans to trot onstage as Lady Godiva on the well-behaved Vroni. Marie joins Wolfgang on his tractor ride, because she too wants to experience the “wild life” in “sinful” Munich. While Marie is quickly intoxicated by the big-city air, good-natured Wolfgang wants to get back to the countryside, to his bowling buddies, as soon as possible. But big-city life has a way of getting under your skin, and embroils the two simpletons from the country in one little adventure after another: Bar owner Basil is not only constantly stressed by work, but also has towering money problems and his hands full with one or two strong-willed hostesses. Richard Rigan’s band is no good and, instead of playing soft rock to encourage drinking and libido, it blasts out loud rock ’n’ roll. While Richard’s musicians enthusiastically reduce the interior of Basil’s “Red Mill” to splinters, the arrogant Richard gets more involved with Marie than Wolfgang likes. When the two disappear into a back room, tipsy on champagne, Wolfgang becomes insanely jealous. He musters all his courage and storms into the room, expecting the worst—but Marie and Richard are merely playing Battleship. Richard then calms things down again at the nightclub by performing three Elvis songs. Everything ends on a reconciliatory note when Wolfgang and Marie fall into each other’s arms and return to their familiar surroundings in the country.
