A poor farmworker’s family seeks a new start in marshland, where his eldest daughter faces the fixation of the young man sharing their farmhouse.
The story
After a long period without stable work or lodging, Luigi Goretti’s impoverished family finds both at a farmhouse near Nettuno, in an unhealthy marshland area. The property is occupied by wealthy tenant farmers, a father and son named the Serenellis. Their young son Alessandro becomes morbidly fixated on Luigi’s eldest daughter, Maria. He initially tries to win her attention with small acts of kindness, but his behavior escalates when she rejects his advances and he threatens her. The family’s precarious new home is thus overshadowed by Alessandro’s growing menace.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The impoverished family of Luigi Goretti, a farm laborer, finally finds lodging and work after a long time in the farmhouse occupied by the wealthy tenant farmers, father and son, the Serenellis, although it is in an unhealthy marshland area near Nettuno. The young and unstable Alessandro Serenelli, in particular, is consumed by a morbid passion for Luigi’s eldest daughter, Maria. At first he tries to attract her with small acts of kindness, then attempts to rape her; when she rejects him, he goes so far as to threaten her. After yet another refusal, the young man attacks her. During the assault, it becomes clear that he has a knife, and Maria dies after a long agony endured with steadfast faith, having even forgiven her murderer. After the killing, he immediately repents, though he is still sentenced for the crime he committed.
