The story

Marianne has been married to Bruno for ten years and lives with him and their son, Stefan, in Paris. For no apparent reason, she decides to leave her husband and live alone with their eight-year-old son. She earns a living as a literary translator, a profession she had pursued before marriage. Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film has no dramatic plot in the conventional sense of cinematic storytelling. Marianne has been married to the manager Bruno for ten years and lives with him and their son Stefan in Paris when, for no apparent reason, she decides to leave him. She leaves her husband and henceforth lives alone with her eight-year-old son. She earns her living as a literary translator, a profession she had already pursued before her marriage. At first, this turning point in her life seems like a step toward freedom. But left to fend for herself and confronted with remarks from Bruno, Stefan, and her friend Franziska, a teacher, she withdraws more and more, and by the end she is completely unattached and lonely, isolated from the outside world.
