Full plot (contains spoilers)

Carlo Ristuccia and Elisa Ambrosi have been married for twenty years. He is a university professor of philosophy and a writer going through a creative crisis, while she works as a journalist for Vanity Fair. Their relationship has stalled: they have to overcome the disappointment of never having become parents. On top of that, Carlo has been seeing one of his students, Blu, for eight months. She works as a waitress at a restaurant the couple often visits with another couple of friends, Paolo and Anna. Blu is pregnant with Carlo’s child and keeps hoping in vain that he will leave his wife, but he cannot decide between the two women. The young woman then loses the baby. In an attempt to revive their marriage, Carlo and Elisa arrange a holiday in Tangier with Paolo and Anna, whose marriage is also in crisis. They have a thirteen-year-old daughter, Vittoria, who is particularly fond of Carlo. The holiday soon encounters its first problem: Anna’s hot-tempered, suffocating attitude toward her daughter. Vittoria seeks—and finds—in Carlo a reliable source of support, since Paolo takes little interest in his family and seems to have only the restaurant he recently opened on his mind. During the stay, while the four adults are discussing some news stories, Carlo explains the meaning of the word “alibi” to Vittoria, and she takes it in. Suddenly, Blu arrives in Tangier to see Carlo and brazenly introduces herself not only to him but also to Elisa, Paolo, and Anna, who greet her warmly, unaware of the truth. One morning, when they are alone, the professor initially tries to send the young woman away, but ends up giving her a very valuable ring and kissing her in public before going with her into a dilapidated building to have sex. Paolo, out in the city, notices their romantic embraces and is shocked. When Carlo returns to the hotel, after leaving under the pretext of going for a jog, Anna notices that he is carrying a book she had previously seen in Blu’s hands. Blu’s pressure grows increasingly intense: at a second meeting with Anna and Elisa, the young woman reveals that she is Carlo’s student, something he had always kept secret. The professor does not know how to resolve the situation and confides in Paolo about it; after all, he does not want to throw away his marriage. Meanwhile, amid one argument after another with her husband and Vittoria, Anna tells Elisa about the book, suggesting a possible relationship between Carlo and his student. Elisa puts together the various pieces of information she has gathered and is shocked when she actually finds the volume containing Blu’s notes in her husband’s suitcase. In the meantime, Carlo, Paolo, and Paolo’s daughter go to see the dolphins in an inflatable boat. Blu joins them, to the embarrassment of the two adults, and becomes friendly with Vittoria, who suspects that the girl and her professor are having an affair. Once back on shore, Paolo agrees to let the thirteen-year-old go for a walk with her new friend. Paolo stops to smoke hashish in a local den and forgets about the two girls. Carlo returns to his room, finds the book torn up, and realizes he has been found out—but there is a worse problem: it is night, and the two young women have disappeared. Paolo and Carlo begin a frantic search through the streets of Tangier, made even more desperate by the fact that neither girl can be found. Unaware of the alarm, Elisa spots them on the rocks, chatting amiably. But then Vittoria, looking grim, returns to the hotel alone, kisses Carlo almost on the lips, and whispers that he will no longer have to deal with his problem. The next day, Blu’s body is found at sea: the girl has drowned. Knowing that her adored Carlo had an alibi, Vittoria had helped him solve his problem, unaware that Elisa had already discovered her husband’s affair. Tired of Anna’s difficult personality, Paolo leaves her in the middle of traffic as soon as they return to Italy. The Carabinieri hear the different accounts of what happened. Elisa, specifically, says that she saw Blu alone on the rocks, omitting Vittoria’s presence. The four adults explain that they fled Morocco so they would not have to deal with the local justice system.
