After leaving his institute post to pursue pure science, a devoted biologist finds his greatest joy in his granddaughter Nina.
The story
A biologist, academician, and research institute director leaves his post to pursue pure science, the central work of his life, alongside Kotikov, a young scientist equally devoted to it. His wife has left him, and years later his grown daughter suddenly returns, having turned out to be a shallow, narrow-minded bourgeois woman. He welcomes her lovingly and without complaint, recognizing her shortcomings. His granddaughter Nina, sincere, pure-hearted, and impulsive, becomes the joy of his life; her grandfather, as she calls him, feels her joys and sorrows more keenly than his own.
