When two married couples share a weekend, an unexpected attraction between the wives unsettles the lives they have built.

The story

Marie and Bernd, architects who run a firm together, are contentedly married and raising teenage children Lilly and Jonas. Their routine shifts when Dom, a former suitor of Marie’s, visits their firm with his partner Ayla. The couples spend a weekend at Marie and Bernd’s holiday cottage. While the men go sailing, Ayla kisses Marie, who returns the kiss, leaving Marie bewildered. Both women say they are not lesbians, yet their connection persists. Later, Ayla asks Marie to help choose a dress for her wedding to Dom. At a party, they dance and kiss again, and Marie flees, confused by what has begun between them.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Marie and Bernd, both architects who run a firm together, are a contented middle-aged married couple with two teenage children, Lilly and Jonas. One day, Dom, a former suitor of Marie’s, and his partner Ayla visit them at their firm. The two couples spend a weekend together at a holiday cottage owned by Marie and Bernd. While the men go sailing, the two women grow closer after Ayla spontaneously kisses Marie, who kisses her back. At first, Marie is completely bewildered, and at dinner with both couples, she tells Ayla privately that she is not a lesbian. Ayla says the same about herself. Shortly afterward, Ayla picks Marie up from the office to help her choose a dress for her wedding to Dom. An acquaintance of Ayla’s takes them to a party, where Ayla and Marie dance together and kiss each other again. Completely confused, Marie flees and drives home. After an argument with her daughter Lilly and Lilly’s boyfriend, Fridy, she heads determinedly to Ayla’s home nearby and has sex with her. A few days later, Marie tells Ayla that she has no interest in giving up her family for her and that their affair is over. Ayla, now pregnant by Dom, is admitted to the hospital after suffering a bout of weakness. Worried, Marie immediately goes to see her with Bernd. When the men leave the hospital room, the two women come together again and kiss. Bernd grows suspicious and asks Marie whether she loves Ayla. She indignantly denies it and uses Bernd’s affair with Vicky, an employee at the architecture firm, to divert attention from herself. Marie had happened to see Bernd and Vicky having sex in the office one evening. Ayla and Dom get married. At the wedding reception, the men get drunk while Marie and Ayla dance together and then kiss in what they think is an unobserved moment. However, Jonas has become suspicious after watching the two women dance intensely together, and sees them kiss. Later, the two women slip away and have sex again. After Ayla and Dom return from their honeymoon, Marie feels jealous of him and confronts Ayla. They both confess that they have missed each other and meet again to make love. They also know, however, that they must tell their husbands the truth, but put it off. At the Christmas Eve gathering that follows, attended by both couples and the two children, everything erupts. Because Jonas is not allowed to visit his friends again, he accuses the adults of being hypocrites and reveals the affair between the two women. He runs away from the house to Marie’s father, while the two women confess their relationship to their husbands and declare their love for each other. Bernd and Dom react with shock, confusion, and anger. The next day, Marie visits Jonas at her father’s and asks him to come back home. She explains that she has fallen in love with Ayla and is glad that the truth is now out in the open. She also insists, though, that she does not want to separate from Bernd. At Christmas lunch with Bernd’s parents, Marie talks about moving into a duplex together with Ayla and Dom. Bernd angrily rejects the idea and tells Marie that Ayla and Dom are moving to London. The two women talk things through, and Ayla explains that she does not have the strength to lead a double life and that it is impossible for both couples to live together. She has chosen Dom and is going to London with him. She asks Marie whether she has made her choice. Marie is left distraught and heartbroken. Shortly afterward, she sees Ayla and Dom getting into a taxi to go to the airport. Ayla looks longingly toward Marie and Bernd’s house. Marie leaves the house too, despite Bernd trying to stop her. But Marie tells him she can no longer be with him and drives to the airport. There she learns that the last flight to London has already left; nevertheless, she searches for Ayla and then sees her with her luggage. Ayla has made her choice too and has not flown away. The two women hurry toward each other and embrace, saying, “I want you!”
