In 1991 Paris, a writer and an actor face competing romantic desires that strain their relationships and family commitments.
The story
In Paris in 1991, writer Marcus appears consumed by his wish to write but masks it with confidence. His partner Hélène, a painting restorer, considers him selfish and leaves to work in Rome, also leaving him for another man. Marcus’s friend Paul, an actor, is caught between preserving his family and seeking affairs: his wife, Fanchon, has just given birth to their second child, while he is particularly drawn to Ulrika, a German woman who is not ready to begin another relationship. Their different struggles expose the tension between romantic desire and personal commitment.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In Paris in 1991, several people struggle to find peace in their respective love lives. Marcus is a writer who seems obsessed with his desire to write, yet puts on a show of confidence. His partner Hélène, a painting restorer, finds him too selfish and leaves to work in Rome, while also leaving him for another man. Meanwhile, Paul, an actor and friend of Marcus, is torn between wanting to keep his family together—just as his wife, Fanchon, gives birth to their second child—and wanting to have extramarital relationships, particularly with Ulrika, a German woman who, for her part, is not ready to embark on another love affair. Marcus and Paul eventually set off together for Rome. Marcus reconnects with Hélène there, while Paul wanders around and wants to return to Paris to find a young admirer who becomes his new mistress.
