A newlywed pediatrician's hopes for family life collide with his wife's devotion to sport.

The story

Pediatrician Dr. Felix Rainer falls for the confident Madelaine Wengert, and they soon marry. On their honeymoon, Felix discovers that Madelaine is far more absorbed in sport than in spending time with him: she changes their itinerary to compete in a tennis tournament in Cannes. He is also dismayed to learn that she has no immediate plans to have children. Back home, their differing priorities continue as Madelaine arranges a gym and boxing room in their new house, while Felix wishes for a more conventional home and family life.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

When Dr. Felix Rainer, a pediatrician, meets Madelaine Wengert, he immediately falls in love with this charming, confident woman. It is not long before the two are standing at the altar, and from the moment their honeymoon begins, Felix realizes that Madelaine is obsessed with her sporting activities. She spends most of her time taking part in a tennis tournament instead of being with him. He is astonished to discover that she had changed their honeymoon itinerary without his knowledge so she could compete in the tournament in Cannes. On a train, a sleeping-car attendant hints to Felix that a woman who brings three tennis rackets on her honeymoon is not a true wife. Finally, he is bewildered to learn that Madelaine has no immediate plans to start a family by having children. Back home, after they have furnished their new house together, Felix is far from enthusiastic when he learns that Madelaine is setting up a gym and boxing room according to sporting standards and does not attach much importance to a proper home. Felix is also upset that his wife continues to have an intimate relationship with her athletic friend Adolf. To change things, the unlucky husband follows the advice of his former friend Luise and tries to make Madelaine jealous. He attends an ice hockey match with Luise, knowing that Madelaine will be there too. His plan works when his wife reacts indignantly, and this leads to a discussion in which they agree that their love is the most important thing to them. Newly reconciled, the young couple sets off on another honeymoon, this time a proper one. Felix is happy to see that Madelaine no longer objects to his desire to have children soon.
