A polished Berlin department-store buyer’s orderly life is upended when she must suddenly care for her grandchildren.
The story
Juliane Kostner, a stylish, single buyer at an upscale Berlin department store, has a strained relationship with her grown daughter, Henrike. When Henrike, heavily pregnant, is hospitalized after fainting, Juliane suddenly has to care for her grandchildren, Nils and Sarah. Their pilot father, Martin, has no time for the children and asks Juliane to help. The children are initially delighted by her different approach: shopping trips and fast food replace their usual organic food and eco-friendly clothes. Juliane also finds an agreeable admirer in Johann, her neighbor. As work and family demands mount, balancing both becomes increasingly difficult.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Juliane Kostner has worked for over 30 years as head buyer at an upscale Berlin department store. She is charming, worldly and fashion-conscious. But her attractive appearance contrasts with a personal life that is not quite so rosy. Juliane, who is single, does not have a very good relationship with her fully grown daughter, Henrike. When Henrike has to go to hospital after fainting while heavily pregnant, Juliane suddenly has to step in as a babysitter. Since her son-in-law Martin is a pilot and has no time for his children, he asks Juliane to look after his children, Nils and Sarah. At first, they are thrilled: instead of organic food and eco-friendly clothes, there are now fashionable shopping trips and fast food. Juliane can even see some good in the disruption that enters her orderly life, because she finds a likable admirer in Johann, who lives next door. But the demands of balancing work and family and doing the right thing in each sphere become increasingly difficult to meet. After Juliane forgets to pick little Sarah up from school, her daughter Henrike promptly throws her out. Shortly afterward, Juliane also loses her position as head buyer to a younger colleague because of an incorrect order. She is demoted to lingerie saleswoman. But Juliane does not give up. She reorganizes her life and tries above all to be there for her grandchildren and to be more attentive to her daughter’s wishes. She comforts little Sarah, who misses her mother, and helps her grandson Nils, who is teased at school because he is overweight. She also has a serious talk with her constantly absent son-in-law, Martin. Henrike has to realize that behind her stylish and seemingly self-centered mother is a truly loving person.
