After a hit-and-run leads to hospital community service, an anxious architect meets a solitary boy with a mysterious respiratory illness.

The story

After a minor traffic accident, architect Tom Pohlmann commits a hit-and-run and must perform community service at a hospital. His obsessive-compulsive disorder and fear of speaking in front of people make the assignment a challenge. On the children’s ward, he meets Paul Wünsche, a solitary child with a mysterious respiratory illness who reminds Tom of his own difficult childhood. Paul’s single mother, Sarah, is in dire straits: her kiosk has gone bankrupt, and she works almost around the clock, hoping to secure a bank loan so she can get it back.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After committing a hit-and-run following a minor traffic accident, Tom Pohlmann has to perform community service at a hospital. For the architect, who has obsessive-compulsive disorder and, among other things, is terrified of speaking in front of people, this is a real challenge. On the children’s ward, he meets Paul Wünsche, who suffers from a mysterious respiratory illness. The solitary child reminds Tom in an unexpected way of his own childhood, which was not always easy. As he spends time with Paul and the other young patients, Tom discovers that he has the ability to inspire other people. This is an astonishing revelation not only for the architect, who until now could make absolutely nothing of children, but also for the children’s ward staff and Paul’s mother. Single mother Sarah is in dire straits. To get her kiosk back after it went bankrupt, she works almost around the clock, hoping this will get her a bank loan approved. Tom, who has grown fond of Paul, tries to give her the money for it, but Sarah angrily tears up the check in front of him. Then it also turns out that the architect and his business partner are not entirely uninvolved in Sarah’s difficult situation. Nevertheless, Tom manages to convince Paul’s mother that his feelings are sincere. Meanwhile, he has also changed the course of his company, which was supposed to be taken over by a large corporation. Having practiced until he can finally speak in front of people, he persuades the businesspeople to abandon the merger. Instead, he takes over the company himself, having successfully set the necessary financial steps in motion. On Christmas Eve, Sarah opens her kiosk. Tom gives her a weekend stay in Paris for three people and a knife for Paul.
