After a gas-station robbery, Inspector Sarah Kohr traces the gun used in it to a decades-old case and a village guarding a secret.

The story

While travelling with her mother to her father’s grave, Inspector Sarah Kohr witnesses a gas-station robbery. The masked perpetrator attacks her and shoots at her; Kohr defends herself with her own weapon. Seeking to learn where the gun came from, she discovers that it was used 25 years earlier by members of the Revolutionary Cells. The trail leads her to Lukas’s girlfriend, Jule Hohenbek, who takes Kohr to an old bunker in the Teufelsmoor. The ammunition and weapon parts found there have disappeared. Despite the terrorist threat, Kohr pursues the case herself, meeting resistance from villagers she suspects are hiding something.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sarah Kohr is on her way with her mother to her father’s grave. When they stop at a gas station, Kohr witnesses a robbery. The masked perpetrator tries to flee and attacks Kohr. When he then shoots at her as well, she defends herself with her own weapon. The badly wounded teenager is taken to the hospital and treated, but dies a few days later. Kohr is as shocked by what happened as the gas station attendant and the victim’s relatives. She wants to find out where Lukas Ladewig got the gun. An analysis of the projectile establishes that the pistol had been used once before, 25 years earlier, by members of the Revolutionary Cells. Reinhard Selig was arrested at the time and has since served his prison sentence. His two accomplices have never been caught, and he has never given them up. Sarah Kohr asks Lukas’s girlfriend to show her where the boy got the gun. Jule Hohenbek takes the inspector to an old bunker in the nearby Teufelsmoor. By now, however, all the things Lukas and Jule found there have disappeared. From cellphone photos Jule provides, the investigator identifies them as ammunition and weapon parts. Given the terrorist threat they pose, the case should really be handled by a special task force, but Sarah Kohr wants to see it through herself. While looking around the Teufelsmoor, she spots a car submerged in the bog, and suddenly someone opens fire on her. Sarah Kohr meets with little sympathy from the villagers during her investigation. She is therefore convinced that everyone here knows something. However, she cannot work out what secret the village is so determined to protect. Once the car has been recovered from the bog, it is established that it was the terrorists’ getaway car at the time. According to Mayor Grebe, they found the car abandoned after it had collided with a tree and took the suitcases left inside. They divided the money found in them among themselves, an offense that would now be beyond the statute of limitations. Kohr doubts this explanation, and when the bodies of the two terrorists are found in the bog, the village mayor comes under suspicion. He insists, however, that the two men died in the car accident and that he was not responsible for their deaths. Shortly after Lukas dies, his father is found hanged. Gesa Ladewig is convinced that Jan did not kill himself. She asks Sarah Kohr to find out who did this to her husband. In the end, it turns out that the bodies in the bog are not the terrorists, but two villagers who did not survive the car accident. They were “swapped” for the fugitives, who rewarded the village with money from their bank robberies. As Katrin and Wolfgang Hohenbek, they were then able to live relatively undisturbed for 25 years. Media reports and an inquiry Kohr made to Reinhard Selig have alerted him, and he now hopes to track down the money and weapons lost back then. To force the Hohenbeks to cooperate, he takes their daughter hostage and says that he had already interrogated Lukas Ladewig and his father, but unfortunately without success. Only the mayor had handed over some of the weapons after Selig “paid him a visit.” Sarah Kohr happens upon Jule Hohenbek, who has been tied up. When Reinhard Selig arrives, she incapacitates him and rushes with Jule to the village, where she has heard a gunshot. There, she has to defend herself against the mayor and his henchmen, who still want to preserve their “perfect world” at any cost. The Hohenbeks help them—after all, they can no longer run from their past. Once the villagers’ blockade has been successfully brought to an end, the main culprits are arrested, along with Jule’s parents and Reinhard Selig.
