A withdrawn West Berlin computer specialist is drawn into a romance and a scheme to siphon banks’ rounding discrepancies into a Swiss account.
The story
Forty-year-old Victor Faber lives a deliberately secluded life in West Berlin, developing and monitoring computer programs for corporations and banks. His limited social outings are usually with his longtime girlfriend, Renate. At an art gallery opening, he meets actress Juliet, who is there with her boyfriend, Melo. Melo is keenly interested in Faber’s specialist knowledge of computer programs. Juliet later invites Faber to dinner, and a romance begins between them. Meanwhile, Melo proposes exploiting tiny daily rounding discrepancies in the banking system by diverting them to an account in Switzerland. Faber hesitates, then agrees and opens an account in Zurich; the plan requires a bank break-in.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Forty-year-old Victor Faber lives in West Berlin and works in information technology. He develops and monitors computer programs for corporations and banks. He leads a secluded life in a solitude of his own choosing. He occasionally goes to the theater or to exhibitions, but only with his longtime girlfriend, Renate. At an art gallery opening, Faber and the actress Juliet meet. Juliet has come with her boyfriend, Melo. Melo expresses an intense interest in Faber’s specialist knowledge of computer programs. A few days after the opening, Faber receives an invitation from Juliet to dinner. A love affair develops between the two protagonists. In parallel, Melo pursues an idea: using a manipulation of the banking system to have the daily discrepancies caused by rounding transferred to a Swiss account. After initially hesitating, Faber agrees to the scheme and opens an account in Zurich. The manipulation requires a break-in at the bank, organized by Melo. Only after that can Faber act. But the burglars shoot a security guard, and events take an unforeseen turn.
