Full plot (contains spoilers)
Louis Gaborit is a successful young detective. One day, he sets out to investigate the murder of a colleague who was killed in a bombing. During the investigation, he receives strange messages from the suspected killer, which lead him to the scene of a horrific mass murder. The perpetrator, who describes himself as an artistic genius, sees the detective as an equal and plays a game of cat and mouse with him. Although Gaborit manages, with difficulty, to corner him, the killer nevertheless remains in control while committing another murder. Finally, the killer arranges a meeting with the detective and reveals his motive: revenge. He also tells him of his intention to kill one last person to complete his revenge. Despite all his efforts, Detective Gaborit is unable to prevent the murder the madman announced, or the killer’s subsequent suicide after committing the crime.
