Full plot (contains spoilers)
Public Security Commissioner Francesco Olmi is a rather troublesome official at Rome police headquarters because of his ruthless methods and incorruptibility. One day, he is called in to investigate the double murder of two young people. The investigation leads to Degan, the director of customs at Fiumicino Airport, but, without sufficient evidence, Olmi cannot have the criminal charged. After unsuccessfully trying to eliminate the commissioner, Degan flees abroad, aided by the complicity of the despicable Judge Garganese, who covers his escape. Transferred to Civitanova Marche, Olmi spends a brief period leading a quiet provincial life, but cannot stay away from the action and begins investigating an arms-smuggling operation. Before long, he manages to close in on the new gang, whose leaders are a publisher and the owner of a fleet of enormous semi-trailer trucks. The bandits, exposed and pursued, storm a school where Anna, Olmi’s lover, teaches, and take her and several children hostage. The commissioner makes a dramatic solo entry into the building, kills the bandits, and frees the hostages.
