Full plot (contains spoilers)
The young art student Lisa Krapp lives in Berlin with her boyfriend, Louis. Two weeks before they are due to fly to New York City for Lisa’s scholarship, she gets a call from Heide, her father’s new girlfriend. Heide tells her that her father has had a stroke and is now in the intensive care unit in his hometown of Krachgarten. Lisa immediately packs her most important belongings and sets off for Krachgarten. When she arrives by bus, Heide picks her up and takes her to the hospital. The relationship between Heide and Lisa is strained. Lisa finds her father asleep; when she speaks to him, he responds, but seems confused. After the hospital visit, Lisa returns to her parents’ house, but it brings back too many memories of her mother, so she plans to stay with Frieda. Frieda has just started offering her small farm as a B&B in order to attract “international” guests as well. Her first guest, however, is the exceptionally gifted Heinrich, who spent his childhood in Krachgarten but left the village with his parents after being bullied. He is drawn to the peace and quiet of Krachgarten because he is currently writing a research paper about different kinds of silence. Meanwhile, Lisa visits her mother’s grave and then meets up with her friends from Krachgarten by the fountain. There she runs into her ex-boyfriend Gabriel again, who still has feelings for her. He tells her there are problems at her father’s company, where Gabriel works as sales manager, because there is no one to stand in for her father. Lisa feels responsible for taking on the orders in her father’s interests. When she visits her father in the hospital, she promises him that she will take over his position. But inwardly, Lisa is torn between running the company and pursuing her art studies. Together with Marcel, she starts designing a handbag that American customers of the Krapp company have commissioned. Without showing the design to Heide, who works as the company’s secretary, Lisa sends it to the customer. This turns out to be a mistake, as the design does not match what the American customer had in mind. Since the design was not “out of the box,” Lisa sits down that evening to come up with a new design for the bag, and even makes it that same evening from the materials available to her. When she shows the bag to Gabriel and Heide, they are not at all impressed, because it does not represent the company. Lisa reacts irritably and accuses Heide of making a move on her father after her mother died. As the argument threatens to escalate, Gabriel calls Frieda, who immediately comes over. Frieda locks Heide and Lisa in a room so they are forced to talk things out. Lisa learns that Heide was her mother’s best friend and had not made a move on her father after her mother’s death. Quite the opposite: Lisa’s father had imposed himself on Heide, so she was ultimately forced to enter into a relationship with him. Lisa forgives Heide, and the two embrace as a sign of reconciliation. Since the deadline for the final design for the American customers is the very next day, Heide pulls an ace out of her sleeve: In a cupboard, she has a reissue of Krapp’s first handbag design, which they present to the customers. In the meantime, Heinrich is thinking about the pig-trough race scheduled for the next day. After watching one of the teams during a practice run, he spots certain shortcomings that he wants to improve, and Marko Dröscher immediately brings him onto the team. The presentation of the handbag design to the American customer goes perfectly, and Heide and Lisa receive plenty of praise. But since Lisa wants to continue pursuing her dream of studying art in New York, she transfers her position as head of Krapp to Heide. On the way to the pig-trough race, Lisa runs into her boyfriend Louis, who has travelled from Berlin. Louis asks whether Lisa still wants to go to New York, and whether their relationship still has a future. Lisa says yes to both, and they head to the river where the race is taking place. Thanks to Heinrich and his perfected plan, Lisa and Gabriel win the race against Tinka’s team. Gabriel is sad that Lisa is with Louis, but Tinka shows interest in him. During an evening stroll, Heinrich asks Frieda if he can keep the B&B room for a while longer, because he likes the quiet in Krachgarten so much. Frieda agrees and is glad her guest will be staying a little longer, as she has grown quite fond of him.
