The story

Prince Max of Bavaria would rather hunt with his adjutant, Medardus von Krieglstein, than remain at court, much to the displeasure of his cousin, King Ludwig I. To escape the bustle of court, Max travels incognito to Hallstatt and takes lodging at the Löwenwirt as a Bavarian mining foreman. There, the locals mistake fellow guest Andreas Spaun for Max, and Spaun appreciates the deferential treatment. Meanwhile, Princess Luise arrives at Schloss Ort with her entourage and disguises herself as an ordinary girl from Gmunden to attend Hallstatt’s Kirtag unrecognized. At the festival, she and Max meet and fall in love, unaware of each other’s true identities.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Rather than stay at court, Prince Max of Bavaria prefers to go hunting with his adjutant, Medardus von Krieglstein, much to the displeasure of his cousin, King Ludwig I. To keep avoiding the hustle and bustle of court, Prince Max travels incognito with his adjutant to Hallstatt and checks in at the Löwenwirt as a Bavarian mining foreman. The people of Hallstatt mistake Andreas Spaun, who is also staying at the Löwenwirt, for Max. Spaun, who is a little short of money at the moment, finds the extremely deferential treatment he receives as a supposed prince very convenient. At the same time, Princess Luise arrives at Schloss Ort with her entourage. So she can attend the Kirtag in Hallstatt without being recognized, Luise passes herself off as an ordinary girl from Gmunden. At the Hallstatt Kirtag, Max and Luise meet, each unaware of the other’s true identity, and fall in love. When the festival is over, a message arrives from King Ludwig ordering that Prince Max and Princess Luise must marry for reasons of state.
