A marriage-averse romantic faces a test when his friends kidnap the woman they have chosen for him.

The story

Hugo, also known as Thomas Dingelfing, prefers romantic fun with women to marriage. When his well-meaning friends decide he should settle down, they choose a young woman for him. Thomas panics, so they devise a plan: they kidnap his intended bride to see whether he will try to rescue her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The so-called “hero,” Hugo, alias Thomas Dingelfing, is less of a ladies’ man than a man terrified of marriage, who much prefers his romantic fun with women to marrying any of the young beauties. One day, though, his “well-meaning” friends decide it’s high time he settled down. They’ve already picked out a young woman for him, but Thomas is once again seized by sheer panic. So his friends come up with a “brilliant” idea and simply kidnap the woman he’s meant to marry. Now they’ll see whether Hugo is man enough to try to rescue the beauty. He runs into the supposedly kidnapped bride—who has in fact been stood up—again, this time in the role of a striptease dancer. After a few more upheavals, Thomas finally realizes she’s the right one for him, and at last he’s ready to exchange rings with her.
