After an accident leaves a young woman injured and amnesiac, a guilt-ridden police photographer is mistaken for her boyfriend and reluctantly assumes his identity.
The story
Police photographer Jonas is driving his wife, Mette, and their two children when their car breaks down again and causes a serious accident. They are unharmed, but Julia Castlund is badly injured, losing her memory and 90 percent of her eyesight. Feeling partly responsible, Jonas visits her in the clinic, where her wealthy family greets him as Julia’s boyfriend, Sebastian. They know Sebastian only from phone calls with Julia while she was staying in Southeast Asia. Out of sympathy for the family, who see him as Julia’s possible rescuer, Jonas reluctantly assumes Sebastian’s identity.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The jalopy of a car in which Jonas, a police photographer, is transporting his wife Mette and their two cheerful children breaks down yet again and causes a serious accident; however, its occupants are unharmed. Julia Castlund, a young woman, is badly injured; she loses her memory and 90 percent of her eyesight. Jonas feels partly responsible and visits Julia in the clinic—and is greeted by her wealthy family as Julia’s boyfriend, Sebastian. The family knows of this Sebastian only from phone calls with Julia while she was staying in Southeast Asia. Jonas reluctantly allows himself to assume Sebastian’s identity, out of sympathy for the family, who see him as Julia’s possible rescuer. He tries to shake off the role, but then falls in love with the passive, helpless Julia, when his eccentric colleague Frank tells him that Sebastian, who had worked as a drug and diamond courier, was shot dead in Hanoi. Mette realizes that Jonas is slipping away from her. At first she fights it, but then gives up. Frank tells Jonas that he would “take over” Mette. When Julia returns to her parents’ grand home, Jonas is celebrated as her rescuer, but is also humiliated as a thoroughly “ordinary” man—Julia’s previous preference had always been for mountaineers and drug dealers. It has meanwhile emerged that Julia is pregnant, and could only have been impregnated while she was in a coma. The only possible suspect is a patient bandaged from head to toe, but he disappears without a trace when Jonas follows him. Julia and Jonas go to a house by the sea to recover. But there the supposedly dead Sebastian now turns up. He has shed his bandages and seems to resolve every problem by passing himself off as Jonas. Julia’s memory returns—and she recalls the sadism with which Sebastian treated her in Hanoi; so now she takes refuge with the apparent Jonas, while the real Jonas is horrified to discover that the real Sebastian has not only arrived in his old jalopy, but that Frank’s corpse is also in the trunk. Just in time, Julia sees through the web of lies and brutally kills the real Sebastian with a rock, after he shoots at Jonas on the beach. Jonas returns to Mette and the children, but he is no longer welcome there. Mette gives him a suitcase from Julia’s car. In the rain, Jonas is brutally gunned down by an Asian man, and diamonds spill out of the suitcase. Mette laments over her husband’s body—and this is the scene with which the film began.
