Full plot (contains spoilers)
Daniel Lester lives in poverty with his elderly wife, Betsy, after squandering his fortune. One day, he comes to the aid of the beautiful Nagaina, who has been raped in the street by a gang of thugs. The young woman becomes their household maid, and, unbeknownst to Betsy, a relationship blossoms between Nagaina and Daniel. Short of money, Lester plans to rob the local pawnshop so he can pay for a passport and leave his wife to go away with Nagaina. The robbery succeeds, but the police catch Lester and charge him with receiving stolen goods. In prison, Daniel meets Francis. Francis is released, but before leaving he arranges an escape for his friend, who will follow him and receive half the loot in gratitude. During the escape, Daniel breaks a leg and asks Francis to find Nagaina, who has meanwhile hidden herself in a banana plantation. They will divide the loot only once Francis has brought her back. Unaware of who she really is, Francis happens to meet Nagaina, who falls in love with him. They decide to keep this from Daniel, but their need for money leads them to the hut where he is hiding. Nagaina reveals that she is in love with Francis. Deeply embittered, Daniel threatens them, but the two flee. The chase leads through a swamp, where the police also arrive. With his leg hurting, Daniel calls for help, crying out for Nagaina. Moved to pity, she turns back with Francis, but all three end up surrounded by the police. One of the officers tells Daniel that the pawnshop employee is dead, so the charge has become murder. Then he asks whether Daniel knows Nagaina and Francis. Still filled with love for the beautiful mixed-race woman, Daniel says no, ensuring that the two are free to go.
