Full plot (contains spoilers)
Pierre, a shy and absent-minded young man, still lives with his parents in a bourgeois Parisian household. Absorbed in his scientific research and cut off from the outside world, he has never shown any interest in women or social life. Worried to see him remain single, his parents urge him to look for a wife. A series of awkward attempts at courtship begins, as Pierre, ill at ease with social conventions, suffers one failure after another. Fascinated by Stella, a popular singer whose image he discovers on a poster, he becomes determined to meet her, projecting a romantic ideal onto her. After searching for her for a long time, he manages to approach her but realizes that reality does not match his fantasies: Stella is cold and distant. Meanwhile, he overlooks the sincere affection of his neighbor Huguette, whom he finally notices once he has become disillusioned. The film ends with a realization: far from his illusions, it is in the simplicity of everyday life that Pierre finally glimpses the possibility of true love.
