Three bohemian couples discover that parenthood puts their ideals and relationships to the test.
The story
Three couples who identify as “Bobo” (bourgeois bohemians) share a meal when Stella and Markus announce that they are expecting a child. Their friends Mignon and Luis, and Ines and Chris, soon learn they too are expecting. The couples believe they can raise children without becoming conventional or bourgeois, but everyday realities soon challenge that confidence. As they prepare for the births of their daughters, they confront questions about parenting, responsibility, and how children may alter their relationships and routines. Stella, a film-school graduate, films the six adults as they reflect on how parenthood is changing them.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film tells the story of three couples who are friends and identify as “Bobo” (bourgeois bohemians). Over a meal together, Stella and Markus announce to the other two couples, Mignon and Luis, and Ines and Chris, that they are having a child. The other two couples are also soon expecting children. They are all convinced that it is possible to have children without becoming conventional and bourgeois. Before long, reality and everyday life catch up with them. They find themselves dealing with preparations for the births of their three daughters, Lola, Elvis and Aimée, as well as fundamental questions about parenting. Stella and Markus want to decide democratically, as a couple, how to divide the responsibilities for their daughter Lola. Ines, who became a mother unwillingly, often leaves their daughter Elvis in Chris’s care. Mignon wants to keep everything as natural as possible and, among other things, does without diapers; she lets her partner Luis have little say about their daughter Aimée. Through these three new families, the film explores the difficulties of having and raising children, as well as interference and well-meaning advice from others, changes to everyday life and relationships, and shifting priorities. Stella graduated from film school, and throughout the film the six adults repeatedly reflect on camera, as Stella films them, on how parenthood has changed them.
