Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two homeless men, François (Gérard Lanvin), a tough but sensitive wanderer, and Denis (Michel Blanc), a grumbler and hypochondriac, return to France to get their music careers going again with the help of a casual friend who lives near Paris. When they reach their companion’s door, they learn abruptly that he has left without giving an address or even an explanation. Disappointed and practically penniless, François and Denis stay in a seedy hotel and beg on the street and in the Paris Métro, playing a few tunes on François’s guitar. During one of these “performances,” François meets Mathilde (Sophie Duez), a professional dancer, and falls in love with her immediately, while his companion has a series of one-night stands. With no money left for lodging or food, they are taken in at an abandoned building by a troupe of people of African origin, who are also excellent musicians. Amid musical notes, brawls, and shady dealings, they nevertheless try to make their dreams come true.
