The story
Chief Inspector Molinat returns to a seaside resort on the Atlantic coast, which he left ten years earlier after turning a blind eye to a real-estate scam involving his then-mistress. He is assigned to investigate the mysterious death of a man whose corpse has washed ashore, soon followed by more bodies. The case becomes more complicated with the arrival of Inspector Leroyer, whose relations with Molinat are appalling.

Chief Inspector Molinat returns home to a seaside resort on the Atlantic coast that he left ten years earlier, after turning a blind eye to a real-estate scam involving his mistress at the time. He is assigned to investigate the mysterious death of a man whose corpse was washed ashore, soon followed by a second and then more. The case becomes more complicated for Molinat with the arrival of Inspector Leroyer. Relations between the two men are appalling, and Molinat quickly realizes that Leroyer is conducting a double investigation: into the series of murders, but also into the shadows of his own past.
