The story

Sophie, a passionate cook who runs a small catering company, lives with her husband, Hubertus, and their three children in a large farmhouse. With her 40th birthday approaching, her routine changes when Hubertus gives up work for a year to become a househusband. Sophie hopes this will ease her workload, but his way of managing the household clashes with her established routines, while she must devote more time to catering to compensate for his lost salary. Hubertus proposes converting their old stable into a modern kitchen for her business, but the project brings further logistical problems. Seeking a little calm after work, Sophie visits a bar, where she encounters Marc, a man who has been interested in her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sophie is a passionate cook and runs her own small catering company, called Sophie Cooks. As her 40th birthday approaches, she is going through a midlife crisis. She lives with her husband, Hubertus, and their three children in a large farmhouse. When Hubertus gives up work for a year so he can devote himself entirely to being a househusband, Sophie’s life spins out of control. Her familiar routine falls apart because Hubertus interferes with everything and does nothing the way she has always done it. The relief Sophie had hoped for never materializes, since her husband thinks he can arrange his day however he likes. She firmly points out everything that is now his responsibility, as she has to devote more time to her catering company to make up for his lost salary. Hubertus does manage to surprise her when he tells her about his idea to turn their old stable into a modern kitchen for her catering company. He wants to do all the work himself, but logistical problems soon arise, and Sophie becomes increasingly irritated. She only finds some peace after work, when she sits down for a break at a bar. There she runs into Marc Terenzi, whom she met at one of her catering events and who has been interested in her ever since, although he is actually her daughter Nina’s crush. Before Sophie knows it, Marc suddenly kisses her. Disturbed, Sophie takes her leave. The next day, Marc sends her a gift, which makes Hubertus suspicious. To reassure him, she is especially nice to him all day, but the two do not have a passionate night together because Hubertus, exhausted from working on the renovation, falls asleep immediately. Marc sends Sophie not only a constant stream of text messages but also an invitation to the premiere of a film for which he wrote the music. When Nina finds out, she tears all the posters of her crush off the wall. Sophie does not want to give Hubertus reason to be jealous, so she takes him to the premiere—but this only has the opposite effect. Thanks to a very complimentary gourmet column in the newspaper, Sophie receives a great deal of attention and gets drawn into numerous conversations. Hubertus is left standing there without a word to say, and the next day he makes a scene. Furious, Sophie drives to Marc and is on the verge of cheating on Hubertus with him—something she had not originally intended, but now feels Hubertus has practically driven her to do. She has to abruptly cut short their tryst when Hubertus calls from the hospital. One of the twins has accidentally been poisoned, but was found in time. Even so, relations between the couple remain strained, and Sophie moves into the new kitchen, which is now almost finished. Meanwhile, Hubertus meets up with fitness trainer Sylvie Meis, whom he had met while shopping some time earlier. The situation is uncomfortable for Sophie and Hubertus, and they begin talking to each other, but they continue to sleep separately: he in the house, Sophie in her new kitchen. She plans to officially open the kitchen soon and sends Hubertus a written invitation. Unsure whether he will come, she consoles herself with her guests in the meantime. When he does not seem to be showing up, she gradually breaks down in tears. Her mother, who is among the guests, comforts her daughter. When they return to the other guests, Hubertus is there. With help from the fitness trainer, he has rehearsed a dance routine with his three children, which he now performs. Sophie beams. She goes over to Hubertus and kisses him. Everyone dances happily until morning.
