The story

Twenty years after a group of Munich friends looked to the future with big dreams, their lives have taken different paths. Carola and Carlo are still married, though their relationship is strained; Tina and Frank are divorced, and the others have also experienced breakups and new relationships. As Carola’s 50th birthday approaches, Carlo works hard to prepare a celebration and a bowling get-together for the next day. Tina, her sister Sabrina, and Sabrina’s partner Ellen are in town to settle their parents’ estate, but plan to skip the party. When Olaf also says he will not attend and gives excuses, Carlo and Frank grow concerned and decide to visit him.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Twenty years have passed since the Munich friends and couples Tina and Frank, Carlo and Carola, and Sabrina and Olaf looked to the future with big dreams. Today, only Carlo and Carola are still a couple. They have been married for 27 years and have two children, though their relationship is in a rough patch because of Carola’s affair with local politician Florian. Tina and Frank have divorced. Tina now lives in Paris, while Frank is married to Henriette, his second wife, who brought her son Lukas into the relationship. Tina’s sister Sabrina split up with Olaf quite early on, then married Lars and had a son. She is currently separated from her husband and in a new relationship with Ellen. Olaf still lives beyond his means, has a much younger girlfriend, Ellie, and is trying to talk his mother, who lives in a nursing home, into giving him her house. Carola’s 50th birthday is coming up, and everyone is invited, including to a bowling get-together the following day. Carlo goes to great lengths with the preparations to make it a successful event. Henriette has asked him not to invite Frank’s first wife, Tina, whom she still sees as a rival. Tina, Sabrina, and Ellen plan not to attend the party; they are in town only to settle their parents’ estate. When Olaf also says he does not want to come and gets tangled up in excuses on the phone, Carlo and Frank decide to drive over to see him because they are worried. They also run into Tina there. Olaf goes to the party with Carlo, while Frank drives Tina to her parents’ house. The two then spontaneously decide to get a hotel room, but they only talk in the lobby about their hopes and what went wrong between them back then. They do not go up to the room, and Frank drives back to the party alone. That night, Carola finally tells Carlo about the affair, which she has now ended. Carlo merely replies that he knew, but said nothing because he realized it was nothing serious. The next day, everyone meets up to bowl. Tina has to catch her flight soon. She tells Frank that she needs to see him again to talk about things that only the two of them can discuss. She says goodbye, and the others bowl—as they did in the old days.
