The story
In Venice, seventeen-year-old flautist Renato is looking for a married couple willing to adopt him. He ingratiates himself with suitable couples and wins their affection, then disappears by faking a fatal accident when he grows tired of a family. He repeats this deception several times.

In Venice, Renato is a seventeen-year-old flautist looking for a married couple willing to adopt him. Once he has found suitable people, he skillfully insinuates himself into their homes and wins their affection, only to disappear—faking a fatal accident—once he has grown tired of the family. Repeating the trick several times, he meets one last couple, an antiques dealer and a violinist, whom the boy has led to believe that he was born from a long-ago affair the man had. However, all the previous “parents” he abandoned arrive in Venice, determined to expose him. Renato is therefore forced to disappear once again.
