The story

Anne Sandmeier is a married teacher with two children, and she likes to keep life under control. But her son Lenny is frequently injured during sports, her adolescent daughter Mascha rebels against her, and her husband Nils avoids the family’s conflicts. Meanwhile, Anne’s parents Luise and Kurt rediscover a freer, hippie-influenced way of life and contemplate selling their home to travel. When Kurt has a spell of weakness after smoking hashish and Anne has to collect him from the clinic, the differences between generations come sharply into view. Anne tries to support her family while also making sense of her husband’s increasingly strange behavior.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Anne Sandmeier likes to be in control of her life and wants to do things as perfectly as possible. She is married, has two children, and works as a teacher. But little by little, things slip out of her control. Her son Lenny keeps getting injured during sports activities and has become a regular at the clinic. Her daughter Mascha is in the throes of puberty and rebels against all sorts of things, including her uncool mother. Her husband, Nils, meanwhile, stays out of the family conflicts. He would much rather take Anne to Paris so they could have some time to themselves again. Then Anne’s parents, Luise and Kurt, rediscover the hippie lifestyle and are considering selling the family home so they can live more freely and travel. Her mother in particular longs to feel free again, something she was unable to fully experience in the past because she had children. So Luise and Kurt wander through parks with their newfound outlook on life, smoke pot with their new friends, and spend the night with them by the Isar. When Kurt suffers a spell of weakness because of smoking hashish, Anne now also has to pick up her father from the clinic. The generational conflicts become unmistakable. Luise does not want to hear Anne’s criticism, telling her to get her own children under control first. Kurt increasingly fears that his marriage could be in danger because of a rival among the hippie friends. Anne tries to take better care of her family and understand the others’ problems better. She helps Mascha prepare for a climate demonstration and, at the same time, tries to find out why Nils has been acting strangely lately. After investigating, she suspects that he is cheating on her. In reality, he secretly goes to a gambling arcade during the day because he has lost work assignments and can retreat there. An honest conversation restores trust in their relationship. Luise and Kurt, too, reaffirm their love after decades together.
