Full plot (contains spoilers)
Stefano works as a rainbow watcher, an unusual job. Since he is precariously employed, he also has a few odd jobs. One day, he suddenly discovers that he has a half-brother, Giovanni, a thirteen-year-old boy. Stefano leaves his job in Piedmont and travels to Rome to meet his mysterious brother. He is reluctant to become the boy’s guardian and take care of him, but he is persuaded, above all by the prospect of receiving a substantial sum of money in return. On the trip back, the two brothers meet Simona, a singer nearing the end of her tour around Italy with her thirteen-year-old daughter, Francesca. The two teenagers fall in love, and the adults are drawn to each other too, although Simona admits that she has a boyfriend in Paris and will have to join him in a few days. In the meantime, they visit Stefano’s mother and aunt, and her strange behavior leads them to suspect that his mother may be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. On the night of the tour’s final stop, Simona’s group’s pianist is unavailable, forcing her to cancel her performance. Stefano, who knows all the singer’s songs, offers to play piano instead. The concert goes well, although Stefano overdoes the piano solos a little. That same night, at the same hotel, Stefano, convinced he has Simona in his grasp, tries to seduce her. But after an accident in the bathroom, Simona, who is waiting for him on a sofa, falls asleep, and Stefano is left empty-handed. Meanwhile, Francesca confesses to Giovanni that she has heard his brother wants to send him to boarding school. The boy is deeply shaken, and when he tells Stefano that he knows about the plan, Stefano changes his mind and tells his partner as well. This further strengthens the trust between the two brothers, who, although they have different mothers, begin to understand that the bond between them is much deeper.
