The story

Farmer Mathias Kohlhöfer has decided that bachelor Simon Moser would make a suitable husband for his daughter Veronika, unaware that she is already in love with Kaspar Pointer, a man of good character but modest means. When Veronika realizes her father favors Simon, she decides to test the suitor’s motives. Disguised as an unattractive half-sister called Annamirl, she tells Simon she will inherit their father’s fortune, hoping to show her father that Simon’s interest is based on the inheritance.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Farmer Mathias Kohlhöfer, a farmer through and through, is firmly set on the idea that his beautiful daughter Veronika should not marry the first man who comes along. In his eyes, the bachelor Simon Moser would make a suitable husband for his much-loved daughter. In his thinking, however, he fails to consider that his daughter has already fallen in love with someone else. Her chosen man is Kaspar Pointer, who is not especially wealthy; but Veronika does not care about such qualities, since he has a good character. Veronika realizes that her father has already decided Simon would be the right husband for her, and sets out to transform herself to prove to her father that the potential son-in-law he favors is only after her inheritance. To this end, she disguises herself as an extremely unattractive person named Annamirl Kohlhöfer, presents herself to Simon as Veronika’s half-sister, and claims that she will be the sole heir to their father’s fortune. As expected, Simon suddenly takes a liking to her, proving to her father that Simon is interested only in the wealth he stands to gain through an inheritance with a wife at his side. Veronika’s father admits his mistake and agrees to recognize his daughter’s true beloved, Kaspar, as his future son-in-law.
