A newly engaged couple’s attempt to avoid a fraught family Christmas brings both sets of parents to their door.
The story
Karo, a tenancy-law lawyer, and Lasse, a substitute teacher, fell in love a few months ago and now share a home with Karo’s two children and Lasse’s daughter, Toni. Shortly before Christmas, they get engaged. They had planned to spend the holiday at Karo’s parents’ house, but Karo’s soon-to-be ex-husband Guido is also invited. In a bid to avoid that awkward gathering, Karo tells Lasse her father is ill and tells her parents she wants to celebrate alone with Lasse. Lasse also disinvites his parents. Their separate excuses prompt both sets of parents to turn up unexpectedly, bringing sharply contrasting expectations and a new strain to the couple’s first Christmas as a blended family.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Karo, a lawyer specializing in tenancy law, and Lasse, a substitute teacher, met a few months ago and fell in love. She is currently getting divorced from her husband; he was left by his wife years ago. Karo has moved in with her two children with Lasse and his daughter Toni, and shortly before Christmas the couple get engaged. They had originally planned to celebrate this year’s holiday at Karo’s parents’ house, but since Karo’s soon-to-be ex-husband Guido has also been invited by her parents, Karo has to make other arrangements. On the spur of the moment, she tells Lasse that her father has fallen ill, while telling her parents that she would rather celebrate alone with Lasse. Lasse then also uninvites his parents. This prompts both sets of parents to visit their children at Christmas. In fact, the two very different couples arrive for Christmas without warning. The demanding Wilfried, a retired major, and his wife Angelika want only the best for their daughter, worry about their grandchildren, and still resent her separation from Guido. Lasse’s left-wing alternative parents, Bernd and Lizzie, meanwhile, travel around the world and occasionally use drugs. While they take everything in stride, the presence of Karo’s parents puts Lasse under pressure. He can only manage to get hold of a pathetic excuse for a Christmas tree, and when the wrong Santa costume is delivered, he has to go looking for a replacement. As a result, he stands Toni up at their annual Christmas currywurst meal. Lasse meets a depressed Santa, and after sharing several alcoholic drinks, he initially manages to talk him out of his costume. However, Santa changes his mind, so the matter has to be settled in a fight. Drunk and with a bleeding nose, Lasse makes his way home. At his apartment, Guido, who has sneaked in, is already handing out presents to the children, much to Karo’s father’s delight. Lasse and Karo get into an argument, and Lasse finally admits to her that he has just lost his job. In this situation, Karo decides to go to Guido’s with the children and her parents. Before they leave, she argues with Guido, and Karo’s parents now also find out that the man they hoped would become their son-in-law cheated on Karo in every way imaginable. Suddenly, Lasse calls to say that Toni has run away. Lasse, Karo, and both sets of parents set out together to look for Toni, who has driven off in a friend’s van. Since Toni has Angelika’s tablet, they can locate and follow the teenager. They find Toni at a parking lot just as her companion is about to get pushy. The family makes up, and they return to the apartment with Toni. There, the remorseful Guido has prepared fries and currywurst with Karo’s children. So in the end, everyone is able to enjoy a lovely Christmas after all.
