The story

Marco, 42, is forced to leave home after his wife Giulia, his partner of twenty-five years, tells him she is seeing someone else. His longtime friend Claudio comforts him, though Claudio is worried about his mother's drinking. One evening, Marco says he would not repeat the mistake of getting together with Giulia if he could go back. The two men are struck by a car and wake up in 1990, young again and back at school. Marco sees a chance to avoid his former relationship, while Claudio hopes to help his mother; navigating school-age life and old feelings soon complicates Marco's plan.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Marco, 42, has a perfect life, a lovely family, and a great job. But one day, his wife Giulia, whom he has been with for twenty-five years, confesses that she is seeing someone else and leaves him; he is therefore forced to move out and rethink his whole life. His longtime friend Claudio is there to console him. Claudio has also been having a hard time lately, because his alcoholic mother is a constant source of worry. The two cheer each other up, and one evening Marco confesses to Claudio that if he could go back, he would not make the mistake of getting together with Giulia. As they reflect on this, they are hit by a car and pass out. When they wake up, they find themselves back in 1990, young again, sitting at their school desks and forced to relive the typical problems of that age: allowance, schedules, oral exams, and, for Marco, the fateful first meeting with Giulia. Now Marco has the chance to change his fate: if he and Giulia do not get together, she will not be able to leave him. So he decides to make the most of this opportunity. Already knowing how everything will unfold, once he meets Giulia he tries to avoid her at all costs. But the mission proves difficult: Marco has a hard time staying away from her because he is captivated by her beauty, and the girl proves to be strongly attracted to him and pursues him quite aggressively, even going so far as to sneak into his house and his hotel room during a trip to Amsterdam, where their families had met by chance. Claudio, meanwhile, decides to help his mother, Giuditta, who had begun having problems with alcohol around that time, by getting her to meet Lando, an old suitor of hers. But things do not work out well for him either: after arranging for the two to meet, Giuditta gets Lando drunk, and Claudio is back where he started. After a series of failed attempts, Marco finally manages to dump Giulia by telling her what her future will be if she gets together with him, plunging the girl, who does not believe his words, into terrible anguish. In the meantime, Claudio finds his smartphone and, discovering that it still works and can connect to the Internet of the future, gets an idea: he goes online, looks up the results of the upcoming football betting pool for the round in which Napoli won its second league title—which are, of course, available online—and has Lando place a series of bets, knowing in advance that every one of them will win. But when Marco then learns that Giulia is dating another boy, his classmate Sandro Garbarino, he cannot resist and rushes to her house to declare his love. And then, as he and Claudio ride over to her on a moped, they are hit again. When they come to, they find themselves back in the present, in a hospital. Once discharged, they discover that they have achieved their aims: Marco has a different job and a different house, is separated, and has married another woman; Claudio has become a millionaire thanks to the betting slip he placed in 1990, which earned him four billion lire at the time, and is married to a beautiful woman, while his mother, although she has not stopped drinking, is still with Lando and is therefore no longer a constant source of worry for him. Two days later, Claudio invites Marco to dinner at his beautiful house with many friends, and there Marco runs into Giulia again, who has since married Sandro as well. At first she feels a little uncomfortable seeing him again, remembering that great unrequited love. But at the end of the evening, after Marco has gone home, exactly what happened before the time trip happens again, only this time with the roles reversed: Giulia shows up at his house and hugs him, telling him she has left her husband for him, and at last Marco can be with the woman he has always loved.
