After doctors urge that he rest, Fabricius agrees to send him to Switzerland for six weeks following a traffic accident. Mrs. Lauber welcomes Wolfgang with affection, and he meets Heidi. They quarrel at first but become friends. His friendship with Jöggi is more difficult: Jöggi is jealous of the time Heidi spends with Wolfgang, and even Jöggi’s uncle Abegg cannot calm him down.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Six-year-old Wolfgang is a musical prodigy. He already gives piano concerts, and his uncle Fabricius pushes him to achieve ever more. The doctors strongly advise him to let the child get some rest, too. When Fabricius is in a traffic accident, he agrees to let the boy go to Switzerland for six weeks to recuperate. Mrs. Lauber lovingly takes Wolfgang in and gives him the affection he lacks from his strict uncle. Wolfgang also meets Heidi there. At first the two quarrel, but then they become friends. His friendship with Jöggi proves a little more difficult. At first, Jöggi is jealous that Heidi spends so much time with Wolfgang. Even his uncle Abegg, with whom Jöggi lives on an alpine pasture, cannot calm him down. While looking for his dog, which he was given at Mrs. Lauber’s, Wolfgang falls into a mountain stream. Heidi and Jöggi just manage to rescue him. The hypothermia gives Wolfgang pneumonia. But since Jöggi has also begun to worry about Wolfgang, he soon recovers. Then Wolfgang’s uncle Fabricius turns up and takes Wolfgang back on tour. During a live television concert, Wolfgang collapses from exhaustion. After the doctor gives Fabricius a very stern talking-to, he realizes that he has been pushing the boy too hard and takes him back to Mrs. Lauber.
